At the predicted rate of growth, demand for silicone rubber in Americaā€™s strategic industries, including aerospace, defense, medical & pharmaceutical equipment and high technology equipment could outstrip American sources of supply in the not too distant future.
It is estimated that over 75% of base silicone is produced in Asia. Much of silicone rubber used to make gaskets begins with imported base silicone. This makes American strategic industries dangerously vulnerable to disruption of the international supply chain for this critical material.
A group of companies serving these strategic industries with various silicone rubber products is exploring options for strengthening the domestic supply chain and protecting Americaā€™s position as a world leader in these industries. They are The Silicone Rubber Supply Chain Working Group.
